CECAFA representatives Tanzania and Uganda fell in their opening matches of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations U17 championship here in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, Tanzania leaving host fans gutted after a nine-goal thriller in which the home boys showed incredible fight.

Tanzania were down 1-3 to Nigeria at half time but came back to level 3-3, then take a 4-3 lead which seemed to have put them on path to victory. But the resolute Nigerians were up to tradition overhauling for a 5-4 victory.

Nigeria, five-time Fifa World Cup winners at this level rode on their tradition. The four finalists at this African championship qualifies for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil in October.

Uganda were unable to Angola who scored in the 31st minute, this becoming the result of the second match at the National Stadium that kicked off at 7pm, East African time. President of CAF (African Football Confederation) Ahmad Ahmad attended the opening of the tournament accompanied by Tanzania Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.

The Council of Easy and Central Africa (Cecafa) region teams have their work cut out for them and must go flat out for victories in their remaining two matches each in the group stage of the eight-team tournament.

Tanzania 4-5 Nigeria

After Olatomi had given Nigeria the opener in the 21st minute, Edmund John quickly levelled for Serengeti Boys after barely a minute. Nigeria were to stretch the lead to 3-1, Ubani and Amoo going on the score sheet and making it appear like Nigeria were running away with it.

Tanzania were to come back from a 1-3 at the break, spectacularly adding to a Kelvin John goal with two concecutive penalties and a 4-3 lead. However Ubani hit his second in the 72nd minute and Jabaar closed it at 5-4 in the 79th minute.
