Ekiru in half marathon win as Team Kenya fight off tag of worst ever performance at Games

TITUS Ekiru gave  Kenya her fourth Gold medal at the 12th African Games winning the men’s half marathon race in Rabat early on Friday but on the last day of track and field competition, Kenya’s medal mainstay,  the country was on the brink of one of their worst performances in the championships ever.

Unless they can win significantly more Gold on the Friday programme Kenya could recall the disastrous outing in Abuja, Nigeria in 2005 where they won a total of only five (5) Gold medals, their worst ever. Kenya’s best was as hosts when they recorded 22 Gold, including an incredible eight (8) in men’s boxing. Away from home, Kenya’s best was in Maputo, Mozambique in 2011 where they collected 14 Gold medals.

On the Friday athletics programme realistic Kenyan wins were expected in: Women’s 400m hurdles, Men’s javelin throw, men’s 5,000m, women’s 1500m, men’s 1500m and 4x400m men’s relay.

On top of that, Kenya expected to morale boosting team Gold medal in the women’s volleyball Final with Cameroon. The Kenyan girls are defending their title having triumphed over Cameroon in Brazzaville, Congo, four years ago.

In Morocco, Kenya has the largest ever African Games cintingent, taking part in unprecedented 22 of 26 disciplines contested. Kenya has 128 women and 131 men competitors, a total of 259. The largest squads were: Athletics – 68; Tae-Kwon-Do 15; Women’s Handball – 15; Boxing -13; Karate – 13; Women’s volleyball – 12.
